چکیده

The current understanding of the response of the frontal bone to blunt impact is limited. Previous studies have utilized vastly different methods which prevents statistical analyses to determine the tolerance of the frontal bone. The purpose of this study is to determine the tolerance of the frontal bone to blunt impact and to define corridors describing its forcedisplacement response. The response corridors were used to evaluate the biofidelity of the Facial and Ocular CountermeasUre Safety (FOCUS) headform, a sophisticated headform capable of measuring forces imposed on eight separate facial regions. Risk functions for fracture were developed using parametric and non-parametric techniques suggesting that 2,500 N represents a 50% risk of fracture. The use of acoustic emission is essential due to the increase in impactor force after fracture onset. The force-displacement response of the frontal bone was found to vary by the type of fracture sustained by the subject. Subjects that were found to have a frontal sinus present within the impacted region had a statistically higher risk of sustaining a fracture. The response of the FOCUS headform was within the force-displacement corridors defined for the cadaveric response. 1 This paper has not been peerreviewed and should not be referenced in open literature.

Dynamic Response of the Skull with Sinuses under Blunt Frontal Impact: A Three-Dimensional Computational Study

The objective of this study is to analyze the biomechanical effects of sinuses in the skull on the facial impact response. Two models were built, where one had sinuses and the other had none. The models were verified using cadaver test data, including impacts to frontal bone, zygomatic bone, and maxillae. In the maxilla and zygoma impact, sinuses were found to have no significant effect on the ...

TRAUMATIC INTRAVENTRICULAR HEMORRHAGE IN SEVERE BLUNT HEAD TRAUMA: A ONE YEAR ANALYSIS

ABSTRACT Background: High resolution CT scan has made early diagnosis of intraventricular hemorrhage (IVH) easier. Posttraumatic intraventricular hemorrhage has been reported to a greater extent because of the CT scan. Methods: 904 patients were admitted in the NSICU from March 2001 to March 2002 with severe closed head injury, of those only 31 patients with intraventricular hemorrhage (GCS le...

Biomechanical Properties of the Male and Female Chest Subjected to Frontal and Lateral Impacts

The purpose of this study was to determine chest impact responses and injury thresholds due to gender differences based on a retrospective review of published data. Data from 83 cadaveric frontal and lateral blunt impacts to the chest and 96 isolated rib bending tests were selected to characterize chest biomechanical properties. Variables selected for analysis were relevant cadaveric informatio...

Adenoid Cystic Carcinoma of the Buccal Mucosa with Rare Delayed Frontal Bone Metastasis: A Case Report

Adenoid cystic carcinoma (AdCC) is a malignant neoplasm, which accounts for 5-10% of all salivary gland tumors (1). About 50% of these tumors originate from intraoral minor salivary glands usually in the hard palate (1). Three clinically obvious characteristics of AdCC include slow growth rate, perineural invasion and high incidence of distant metastasis (1). The most commonly-affected sites of...
